Roskam Statement on Latest Unemployment Numbers

Roskam: “Unfortunately, temporary Census jobs are not an economic recovery. The American economy stands to suffer a major blow when the full force of Speaker Pelosi’s massive, $1 trillion healthcare overhaul hits employers and individuals.”

Congressman Peter Roskam (R-IL), Deputy Whip and Ways and Means Committee member, issued the following statement after the Department of Labor announced the U.S. economy gained 162,000 jobs in March, for a net loss of more than 3 million jobs since the stimulus was passed over a year ago:

“In this economy, any increase in jobs is good news. But today’s jobs numbers are the economic equivalent of cotton candy. Beneath the colorful swirl of sugar and air, we find that, unfortunately, temporary Census jobs are not an economic recovery. The American economy stands to suffer a major blow when the full force of Speaker Pelosi’s massive, $1 trillion healthcare overhaul hits employers and individuals.

The announcement of billions of dollars in new health costs for America’s meat-and-potatoes employers like Caterpillar, John Deere, AT&T and Boeing demonstrate how Washington’s flawed policies will kill jobs and threaten economic growth in the weeks and months ahead. With hundreds of new programs and thousands of pages of regulation yet to be fashioned, this flawed healthcare overhaul will leave employers with less money to pay current employees, less money to invest in research and development, and less money to hire new workers.

For more than a year, the American people have called on Congress to focus on job creation. It is past time we deliver on meaningful efforts to spur innovation and prosperity.”
