America the Beautiful quarters to begin circulation this year
Delaware Congressman Mike Castle, author of the bipartisan America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Act of 2008, joined United States Mint, Philadelphia Plant Manager, Marc Landry; Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge Manager, Michael Stroeh; and Friends of Bombay Hook President, Janet Manchester to kickoff the America the Beautiful Quarters Program and unveil the designs for the first five quarters in the series. The new designs will be released this year and will celebrate the natural wonders found in the United States’ national parks, forests, shores, and other national sites. Delaware, still lacking a National Park, will have a quarter featuring Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, which will be released in 2015.
“I am pleased to kick-off the America the Beautiful Quarters Program here at Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, which will be featured on Delaware’s quarter, and introduce the first five America the Beautiful quarters to begin circulation this year,” said Rep. Castle. “I am hopeful that this series, which will feature depictions of national parks and historic sites throughout the 50 states, will be as successful as the 50 State Quarters Program and incite an interest in our nation’s history, increase tourism to our national parks, and serve as an educational tool in our classrooms. Additionally, at a time when Congress needs to practice spending restraint, it is promising to have a program that actually brings in revenues, which this program has the potential to do, just as the 50 State Quarters Program.”
United States Mint Philadelphia Plant Manager, Marc Landry said, “The United States Mint is proud to begin another spectacular journey, helping to connect citizens, students and collectors with some of the most magnificent and celebrated national parks and sites in our nation. The employees at the United States Mint at Philadelphia and at Mint facilities across America look forward to creating the quarters of the America the Beautiful Quarter Program.”
“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is honored by the U.S. Mint’s selection of Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge for the America the Beautiful Quarters Program,” said Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge Manager, Michael Stroeh. “The Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge design will be the 28th to be featured and will be issued in 2015. We hope that inclusion of the refuge in the Program will encourage Americans to not only travel to Delaware where they can enjoy this refuge, but also the other great wildlands across this country.”
In addition to authoring the America’s Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act, Rep. Castle spearheaded Congressional efforts to implement the widely successful 50 State Quarter Program, which took place between 1999 and 2008 and honored the 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The 50 State Quarters Program generated $8.6 billion in revenue, including $6.3 billion in seigniorage to help reduce the national debt.
